What Each Exam Actually Tests
CIPP (Certified Information Privacy Professional)
CIPP comes in four regional variants — US, E (Europe), A (Asia-Pacific), and C (Canada). Each version tests jurisdiction-specific privacy law: GDPR for CIPP/E, CCPA/CPRA and HIPAA for CIPP/US, and so on.
AI appears in CIPP primarily in the context of automated decision-making rights (GDPR Article 22, CCPA ADMT rules) and data minimization as it applies to training data. It does not test AI governance frameworks, model risk management, or the EU AI Act.
AIGP (AI Governance Professional)
The AIGP tests a fundamentally different body of knowledge: how AI systems work (ML types, model training, drift), how to govern them (impact assessments, risk registers, accountability structures), and what regulations apply specifically to AI (EU AI Act, NIST AI RMF, US executive orders, sectoral rules).
Privacy appears in AIGP primarily as a design constraint — data minimization and purpose limitation as they affect AI training — rather than as the core subject. You will not be tested on GDPR Article-by-Article detail the way CIPP/E tests it.
Which Credential Should You Pursue First?
You are a privacy attorney, DPO, or compliance officer whose primary responsibility is regulatory data privacy. The CIPP gives you the legal framework fluency your role requires. Add AIGP later as AI becomes part of your portfolio.
You work on AI product governance, AI risk management, AI policy, or responsible AI programs. The AIGP was built specifically for your role. Privacy comes later if your remit expands into traditional data compliance.
