The CIPP/E is 90 multiple-choice questions in 2.5 hours, delivered by Pearson VUE at a test centre or online. At a centre, arrive 15 minutes early with two forms of ID matching your IAPP profile name. Online, check-in opens 30 minutes before your slot, on a personal (not work-issued) computer with no VPN. A 15-minute break is offered halfway. You see pass/fail and your scaled score as soon as you finish; 300 out of 500 passes.
Most CIPP/E stress on the day isn't about GDPR. It's about not knowing what will happen: what the check-in involves, whether the break stops the clock, what to do if the webcam fails. This guide walks through the day so the only thing you have to think about is the questions.
Rules here come from the IAPP's Certification Candidate Handbook. Pearson VUE's own rules also apply, so read your confirmation email carefully.
Test Centre or Online? Choose Deliberately
| Test centre | Online (OnVUE) | |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival / check-in | Arrive 15 minutes early; late arrivals may be turned away and lose the fee | Check-in opens 30 minutes before your appointment |
| ID | Two qualifying forms of ID | Government ID shown to camera, plus photos of your workspace |
| Equipment | Provided | Personal computer (not work-issued), webcam, stable internet, no VPN |
| Environment | Controlled, quiet | Private room, clear desk, nobody entering |
| Breaks | 15-minute break offered halfway | You may leave for a break, but the handbook says the timer won't stop |
| Rescheduling | Up to 48 hours before | Up to 15 minutes past your scheduled time |
| Best for | Anyone with an unreliable connection, noisy home or work laptop only | Candidates far from a centre with a quiet room and their own computer |
Corporate laptops often block the OnVUE software, run VPNs or have security tools the proctor will flag. The handbook requires a personal computer for online exams. If that's all you have, book a test centre.
The Week Before: Logistics Checklist
- Match your names. The name in your MyIAPP profile must be identical to the name on your ID. Fix it now, not on the day.
- Online candidates: run the system test on the exact computer, network and room you'll use.
- Test centre candidates: plan the journey and add buffer. Late arrival can mean a no-show and a lost fee.
- Need accommodations? Request them early; the IAPP says the process can take up to 30 days.
- Stop learning new material. Use our last-week CIPP/E cram guide instead.

Eat, hydrate, and keep revision to a quick look at your error log and key numbers (72 hours, one month, the fine tiers). No new topics.
At a centre: ID check, photo, locker for your belongings — no electronic devices or reading material in the exam room. Online: launch the check-in 30 minutes early, photograph your ID and workspace, close all other applications and wait for the proctor.
About 45 questions. Target roughly 100 seconds per question. Flag anything over two minutes and move on.
Take it. Stand up, drink water, don't replay questions. Online, remember the clock keeps running if you leave.
The remaining questions, then your flagged ones. Leave nothing blank — there's no penalty for a wrong answer.
Results appear on screen: pass or fail with your scaled score. You'll also get an email explaining how to see a section breakdown. It can take up to two business days for the result to show in your IAPP account.
What the Questions Look Like
All IAPP exams are multiple choice, with some questions having more than one correct answer — the exam tells you when to select more than one. The CIPP/E mixes short knowledge questions with scenario questions where a few paragraphs describe a company and its processing, followed by one or several questions.
The CIPP/E blueprint (v1.3.3) shows where those questions come from:
| Domain | Questions on the exam |
|---|---|
| I — Introduction to European Data Protection | 7–13 |
| II — European Data Protection Law and Regulation | 18–28 |
| III — European Data Processing | 13–21 |
| IV — European Data Protection: Scope and Accountability | 8–18 |
| V — Compliance with European Data Protection Law and Regulation | 8–16 |
Domains II and III together are the biggest share — data protection concepts, security, data subject rights, lawful processing, information obligations and transfers.
Pacing: The Simple Rule
150 minutes for 90 questions is 100 seconds each. Check yourself at three points:
- Question 30: about 50 minutes used.
- Question 60: about 100 minutes used.
- Question 90: 140 minutes or less, leaving time for flagged questions.
For long scenarios, read the question first, then scan the scenario for the facts it depends on.
If Something Goes Wrong
- You're running late to a centre: call the centre. Arriving late may count as a no-show, which forfeits the fee.
- Your online exam disconnects: reconnect and follow the proctor's instructions; contact Pearson VUE support straight away if you can't.
- You feel unwell on the day: rescheduling windows are 48 hours for centres and up to 15 minutes past the start for online appointments — check what's still possible before you cancel.
- A question seems off-syllabus: 15 of the 90 are unscored test questions. Answer it and move on.
After You Click Submit
If you pass: your digital certificate arrives by email from Accredible within two weeks, provided your IAPP membership or maintenance fee is in place. Then set up your profile — see how to display the CIPP/E on LinkedIn — and note your renewal requirements in our CPE guide.
If you don't: use the section breakdown to find your weakest domains, then read the CIPP/E retake guide. A retake is USD 375.
Frequently Asked Questions
How early should I arrive for the CIPP/E exam?
The IAPP recommends arriving at the test centre 15 minutes before your appointment. For online exams, check-in opens 30 minutes before the scheduled start.
What ID do I need for the CIPP/E?
At a test centre you need two qualifying forms of ID that meet Pearson VUE's requirements. The name on your ID must match the name in your MyIAPP profile exactly.
Is there a break during the CIPP/E?
A 15-minute break is offered halfway through. For remote exams, the IAPP handbook says you can leave for a break but the timer won't stop.
Can I take the CIPP/E online?
Yes, through Pearson VUE's OnVUE online proctoring. You need a personal computer rather than a work-issued device, no VPN, a webcam, a stable connection and a private room.
Do I get my CIPP/E result straight away?
Yes. You see pass or fail with your scaled score at the end, plus an email on how to view a section breakdown. Results can take up to two business days to appear in your IAPP account.
